Off Center: The Art of Modern India

This exhibit of Indian masterpieces, curated by Sundaram Tagore, surveys
the evolution of modern art in India. Borrowed from many prominent collections,
this exhibition will be on display for the first time at The Rye Arts
Center. Gallery Hours are Monday - Friday, 10-5, Saturday 1-4, or by
appointment.
Admission is free.

Celebrated author, Tanuja Desai Hidier reads from her debut novel Born
Confused. Set largely in the context of New York City's explosive Bhangra/Asian
Underground club scene, it is a multicultural coming-of-age story that
follows Indian-American heroine Dimple Lala through a summer that turns
her world on its head. The heart of Born Confused is about learning
how to bring two cultures together without falling apart yourself in
the process.

Dust off your groove thing and come out for this electrifying evening
of new South Asian artists presenting their unique merging of traditional
Indian music and dance with Western influences. This evening promises
to bring the audience to their feet. Organized by "The Diasporadics,"
a not-for-profit organization committed to showcasing the work of emerging
South Asian artists. Artists include Raeshem Nijhon, Kalikut Root, Rez
Abbasi, and Chrysalis Guild. Please visit the RAC website For complete

A Children's Carnival:
Sunday, January 26th, 12 -3 pm
Join us for a fun-filled Indian carnival presented by children for children.
Come watch the folk dances of India, learn to wrap a saree, make an
incense burner, or decorate a royal elephant! Revolving presentations
and hands-on activities will teach about Indian rife and culture. Children
will take away crafts and new knowledge of their Indian peers. All children
under 10 must be accompanied by an adult.
Admission- $7 RAC member children, $8 for non-member children /member
adults, $10 for non-member adults

Film: Monsoon Wedding
Thursday, February 6th, 7:00 pm
With screenwriter Sabrina Dhawan Sabrina Dhawan's first feature length
screenplay, Monsoon Wedding, directed by Mira Nair, captured the hearts
of audiences around the globe (not to mention awards and the high praise
of critics). The film's universal themes of love and marriage arc delivered
inside a distinctively Indian framework, prodding access to contemporary
Indian family life. Ms. Dhawan will share with the audience the process
of writing, and her experience of seeing that writing come to life.
