The Rye Arts Center and The Indo-American Arts Council present Kama Sutra: A Dance Dialogue February 12th, 7:30 pm, at The Rye Arts Center Part of Colors of India: a five-week celebration of Contemporary Indian Art and Culture Join us for this special Valentine's Day performance exploring the themes of love - in union (sambhoga) and in separation (viraha). Sringara, the eternal omnipresent cycle of continuity and union is celebrated in a performance by Swati Bhise, the well-known exponent of the Bharatanatyam style of Indian Classical dance. Visual poetic images of love come to life from the friezes of the Khajuraho temples celebrating the Rasa (flavor) of the Kama Sutra. Using stylized hand gestures and intricate rhythmic footwork, this solo performance eloquently captures the essence of music, poetry, mythology, drama, art, and literature. Swati's original choreography will be accompanied by Savitri Ramanand (vocals), Murali Balachandran Mridangam (percussion), Aarti (cymbals) and Raman (flute). Since her debut in 1980, Swati Bhise has been performing Bharatanatyam to the acclaim of critics, who acknowledge her as an intelligent performer with a keen sense of esthetics. She uses stylized gestures to simplify the art form for lay audiences. A conscientious purist of Indian Classical dance, Ms. Bhise has interpreted western theatre using the art of Abhinaya. She has choreographed ethnic dance for the Thomas Mann musical "The Transposed Heads" at the American Music Theatre Festival at The Lincoln Center, NY, for the Electronic Opera "Mass for the Dead" by American Chamber Opera Company and for Mabou Mines' "Daddy meets Durga". She has performed at the National Center for the Performing Arts, Bombay, Sahitya Kala Parishad, Delhi Administration Cultural Department, SPICMACAY, Bharatiya Kala Kendra, House of Soviet Culture and others. In the US, she has performed at the Freer and Sackler Galleries at the Smithsonian Institution, the General Assembly of the United Nations, the Brooklyn Museum, the Delaware Institute for the Arts in Education, and the San Diego Museum. Apart from being a concert performer, Ms. Bhise has taught extensively and conducted workshops at leading educational institutions and museums such as The American Museum of Natural History, Symphony Space's Curriculum in Arts Program, The Metropolitan Museum, Wesleyan University, and The Lincoln Center Institute. Tickets $12 for RAC members, $15 for non-members, $8 for students and seniors. For information and reservations call (914) 967-0700 X24. |
