Part of Colors of India: a five-week celebration of Contemporary Indian Art and Culture

This four-part event will explore the holistic approach to health, which is an integral part of the Indian lifestyle. Presented by leading professionals in the fields of health and nutrition, these four workshops will provide information on the centuries-old Indian traditions and various practices that together provide an integrated approach to healthy living through lifestyle intervention and a wide range of natural therapies. Participants will engage in workshops exploring yoga, alternative medicine, the curative properties of Indian herbs and spices, and the world of Indian "Chai" teas and they will leave with practical knowledge that can be immediately applied to their individual circumstances

Julie Shah, a renowned yoga instructor from New York, will trace the history of this ancient practice, the evolution and philosophy behind the various schools that exist, and discuss the contribution of yoga to preventing and treating illness. This segment will conclude with a presentation of some simple stretches. Participation is optional.

Dr. Bhaswati Bhattacharya, recipient of the 1998 American Holistic Medical Association's National Award will cover the six accepted medical practices in present day India: Ayurveda, Unana, Siddha, Naturopathy, Homeopathy, and Allopathy. She will give special emphasis to Ayurvedic medicine with focus on how it is applicable to a modern western lifestyle.

Nutritionist and dietitian Shonu Pande will explain the curative and healing properties of Indian herbs and spices and unravel the mysteries of Indian cooking and dietary practices.

Finally, Anupa Mueller, importer of fine teas and owner of Silver Tips Tea Room in Tarry town, NY, will present the history and use of 'Chai1, another Indian phenomenon that has already established a presence in the Western health world. Participants will sample and learn the traditional technique of brewing authentic 'Chai'. These workshops are appropriate for anyone interested in health issues. No prior experience is necessary. If you wish to participate in the demonstration during the yoga segment, please wear loose, comfortable clothing.
