Off Center: The Art of Modern India

Curated by Sundaram Tagore

Off Center: The Art of Modern India traces the history of Indian art over the past one-hundred-fifty years, as it has shifted from the British academic tradition to independent and often cutting-edge esthetics. The exhibition includes works by Manjit Bawa, Jayashree Chakravarty, F.N. Souza, and Abanindranath Tagore. It has been compiled from private east coast collections and will appear exclusively in The Rye Arts Center's intimate gallery, making this unique event a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

The opening reception is free and open to the public, Sunday, January 12C 4-6 pm. Gallery hours are Monday- Friday 10-5, Saturday 1-4 or by appointment. Admission is free. For more information please call (914) 967-0700 x24.

The exhibit will anchor The Colors of India festival, co-sponsored by The Rye Arts Center and the Indo-American Arts Council and consisting of a series of programs that celebrate contemporary arts in India. The festival events will take place at The Center between January 12- February 15.

About the Curator:
Sundaram Tagore, a New York-based curator and art dealer, is a descendant of the influential poet and Nobel Prize winner Rabindranath Tagore. Through his contributions to numerous exhibitions as well as his eponymous gallery, Tagore promotes East-West dialogue by presenting exhibitions of works that suggest the convergence of Western and other cultures. A candidate for a Ph.D from Oxford University, Tagore was previously a director at Pace Wildenstein in New York. He has advised and worked with many international organizations, including the Peggy Guggenheim Foundation, Venice, Italy, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the United Nations, and the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi.
